How learning a new Language can change your Life!
The first thing that crosses our mind when we read the word Language is a mode of communication, or a general medium of communication that is widely accepted and understood in local, regional or international communities.
Widely accepted and understood- These are the two most important features of any popular language. And these two features make one language different from another too!
Let me break it down in simpler terms.
Imagine being in a room full of Arabic-speaking people, and all you know (language) is English. Now, while you can argue that English is one of the most widely spoken and understood languages in the world, this won’t change the perception or mode of communication of people in that particular room. That’s because, in that room, Arabic easily takes precedence over any other language spoken on the face of Earth (or in space for that matter!)
That’s because, in that particular room, Arabic is widely accepted and understood.
So, by that analogy, you can easily understand the significance of language, howsoever small it may seem as compared to another. Every language created/invented on Earth has an importance of its own and that is the reason why today, millions of professionals are keen on learning a new language every single minute or are learning a new language as we speak!
So is it really a Life-changing Experience?
It is.
In a recent conversation with a language trainer based in Slovenia, I came to know about the incredible stories of the transformation of personalities of people who intended to learn a new language for different purposes. The students are mostly professionals working in multi-national corporations or people developing their business online and trying to reach out to a global market.
From what I observed, learning a new language brought many added benefits along with it, which is only a matter of research and easily forgettable. Some of the positive changes that learning a new language tend to bring about in our lives can be summarised as:
· Improved Cognitive Function: Learning a new language keeps the brain engaged at all times. When we are concentrating on learning a new skill or undergoing training, our cognitive functions are heightened through the duration of the learning exercise. When you begin learning a new language, the process is endless because the subconscious is still processing information until you have consciously reached the desired level of proficiency!
· Improved Creativity: Just like analytical thinking, our creativity starts improving as soon as we start learning a new language. Imagine getting to know the ingredients of new chemical composition, and the fluttery feeling to start experimenting with the ingredients to create something new? A similar process starts in our brain as soon as we start getting familiar with new words/vocabulary of a completely alien language.
· Increased Multitasking ability: Although, I am not a huge fan of multi-tasking myself, learning a new language can help us cope with the stress of multitasking more efficiently. When our brain functions improve, and we train our minds to focus our thoughts and interpret them in different languages, the results can be amazing! It not only helps deal with the stresses of multi-tasking but also makes us more logical and adopt a balanced approach towards any problem in life!
· Improves understanding (and appreciation) of our mother tongue: Since most of the learning of mother tongue is based on intuition, people often miss the grammatical accuracy and range of vocabulary of their native language. While learning a new language, as we start exploring the technicalities of the new language, we start observing the technicalities of our native language as well. This improves the understanding of our mother tongue as well as an appreciation for it, as there may be a huge number of people struggling to learn our mother tongue which is completely alien to them!
So can I learn any new language easily?
From what I recall from the conversation with our language trainer friend, learning a new language simply requires 3 actions that need to be performed in order to gain an immensely surprising command over a new language in just a matter of 28 days!
And honestly, our trainer friend inspired me to explore the different languages in the world, and also share the wonderful benefits of getting involved in such an exciting activity as this!
